Danish driver Allan Simonsen died following a crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Saturday in the first driver fatality at the high-speed endurance event since 1997. Race organizers said the 34-year-old Simonsen was taken to the hospital after his Aston Martin No. 95 crashed about 10 minutes after the start of the race. The car spun at high speed and skidded into the barrier at the Tertre Rouge corner where speeds reach up to 170 kph (105 mph). The violence of the impact showed as a tire from Simonsens car rolled on the track while a door hung open. Simonsen died at the hospital soon after arrival "due to his injuries," organizers said. "Tragically, and despite the best efforts of the emergency services in attendance, Allans injuries proved fatal," Aston Martin Racing said in a statement on its website. Sebastien Enjolras lost his life in pre-qualifying in 1997. The last driver fatality in the 24-hour race itself was Jo Gartner in 1986. The worst crash in Le Mans history occurred in 1955 when Pierre Leveghs Mercedes flew into the crowd, killing more than 80 spectators. Aston Martin, which has five Vantage V8 cars in the GTE-Pro and GTE-Am classes, will continue in the race "at the specific request" of Simonsens family and in tribute to the driver. "I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the individuals, and families whose friends or loved ones were involved in todays terrible tragedy," Aston Martin Racing managing director John Gaw said. The safety car came out after the crash and the race was held up for nearly an hour to repair the guard rail. Simonsen was participating for the seventh time at the endurance race, which is won by the team that completes the most laps in 24 hours with up to three drivers alternating. He finished second in the GT2 class at Le Mans three years ago. He clocked the fastest time in qualifying on Thursday in the GTE-Am class. Jean Todt, the FIA president, and Pierre Fillon, president of Le Mans organizer the Automobile Club de lOuest, paid tribute to Simonsen. "Allan was an extremely talented and experienced sports car driver who had raced in every corner of the world and was highly respected by his peers and his team," they said in a joint statement. "For many in endurance racing, Allan was above all a good friend who displayed his passion for racing on and off the track. His loss will be felt by the FIA, the ACO and the greater motorsport family." Simonsen and Danish co-drivers Kristian Poulsen and Christoffer Nygaard were leading the GTE-Am class in the world endurance championship after topping their category at Silverstone in April and finishing second in Spa-Francorchamps last month. Audi held the top three spots after the sixth hour, followed by two Toyotas. IndyCar series leader Helio Castroneves tweeted: "Very sad to know about the fatal accident of Allan Simonsen on Le Mans today. Praying for him and (his) family." Tony Kanaan, another IndayCar driver, tweeted: "Such a tragic news on the passing of (at)AllanSimonsen. Sad day in motorsports again. Thoughts and prayers are with his family." There was second driver death on Saturday, in Germany. Two-time champion Wolf Silvester died because of "health problems" during the German VLN Endurance Racing Championship, race organizers said. Safety marshalls said Silvester, 55, apparently lost control of his Opel Astra OPC, and when they approached the stopped car on the track they found him sitting motionless in the seat. The dpa news agency reported that Silvester had a heart attack.Kyrie 2 Shoes Cheap . R.J. But if you also can spread it around and throw it, it keeps people off balance, coach Darrell Hazell said. As much balanced offense as we can play, well keep (opponents) off balance. It seems like a strange notion at a school dubbed The Cradle of Quarterbacks. But times are a changing at Purdue (1-0).Sophomore quarterback David Blough knows hell be more efficient with a little help from friends like running back Markell Jones.A year ago, Jones rushed for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman. He inherited the feature back job when D.J. Knox tore the ACL in his left knee during Aprils spring game and so far, hes been a hit.He ran 24 times for 145 yards and one touchdown and caught four passes for 24 yards, wearing out the Eastern Kentucky defense. This week, he faces a Cincinnati defense that held Tennessee-Martin to seven points and 3.6 yards per carry.Coach Tommy Tuberville knows it will be a lot tougher for Cincinnati (1-0) to keep up with Jones. They have an experienced quarterback and a very good running back. Their offensive line is bigger and stronger than almost any team we will see. And their receivers have good speed, Tuberville said. Its a typical Big Ten team in that they line up and try to run the ball. Its going to be a real challenge for us.Bloughs challenge will be replicating last weeks numbers -- and coming up with another win.But with Jones leading the way, Blough has already become a big believeer in what the Boilermakers are capable of this season.ddddddddddddI remember coming off the field after the first quarter and telling guys that we have a superstar running back, Blough said, reflecting on last weeks victory. Were going to feed him. He is a workhorse for us.Here are some other things to watch Saturday:STAYING POSITIVEHazell constantly addresses the need to avoid self-inflicted problems and its starting to pay dividends. Purdue ran 83 plays against Eastern Kentucky -- none went for negative yards. In addition, the Boilermakers committed only two penalties in Week 1, tied for the fewest in the nation .ROAD TROUBLECincinnati beat Purdue 42-7 in its 2013 home opener, which was Hazells first game as coach. Hitting the road against the Midwests top conference has been a little more rugged for the Bearcats. Cincinnati hasnt won at a Big Ten school 1959 when they won at Indiana. Since then, the Bearcats are 0-11. Tuberville doesnt mind the trip. Its part of what makes college football fun, Tuberville said. Hes just wants to rewrite the ending.GOING FOR 600The Boilermakers need one more win to become the 10th Big Ten school with 600. Currently, the Boilermakers are 599-545-48. A win Saturday also would give Purdue its first two-game streak under Hazell, and its first 2-0 start since 2007.WELCOME BACKPurdues defense should get a boost this week with the anticipated return of cornerback, DaWan Hunte. After missing last weeks game with a sprained ankle, hes listed as probable this week. Defensive end Austin Larkin, the nephew of baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, also missed last weeks game after injuring his ankle in practice and could be a game-time decision this week.---Online: AP College Football site: http://collegefootball.ap.org/ ' ' '
