GUELPH, Ont. -- The Guelph Storm drew first blood in the Ontario Hockey League final, but head coach Scott Walker looked as if his team had just dropped the opener. Jason Dickinsons goal 57 seconds into overtime gave the Storm a 3-2 win over the North Bay Battalion on Thursday for a 1-0 series lead. But Walker was far from happy with his teams performance. "To be honest with you, we have to play better," Walker said. "We have to focus on winning our battles, skating more and we cant take for granted that were here. They (the Battalion) earned their spot and we earned our spot. We have to start skating and start playing. "We did it in the first and then it was like we werent satisfied. There was something more out there, something better. There isnt anything better than what we were doing in the first." The first period was all Guelph, as they outshot the Battalion 16-6 and beat them to pucks right from the opening faceoff. Holding the leagues most potent offence scoreless in the first period seemed to give North Bay more confidence as the game went on. Battalion head coach Stan Butler was happy with the way his team matched up against the heavily favoured Storm. "I thought we played hard and it was a pretty even game. Once you get in overtime, one shot and its done," Butler said. "They have a great team and thats the style we have to play. We have to play hard, we have to check up ice, track the puck hard and not give them time and space. "If we sit back and watch like we did in the first period and allow them time and space, theyll do serious damage." The Battalion benefited from the scoreless opening 20 minutes by taking it to the Storm in the second. They were rewarded early when Ben Thomson, on a power play, snapped a fat rebound past goalie Justin Nichols, who made 32 saves on the night, for a 1-0 lead at 3:06. But Guelphs Brock McGinn evened the scored a minute later. North Bay continued to play a tough defensive game, holding the Storm to just seven shots in the second period. The Battalion regained the lead 3:35 into the third, as Jamie Lewis wrist shot from the faceoff circle found the top corner past Nichols. But Guelph made the most of the few scoring chances it had, and came back to tie the game once again on its second shot of the third period. Robby Fabbri found Mitchell cruising over the blue-line and he ripped a wrist shot over Smith for his 11th goal of the playoffs at 12:23. With the goal, Mitchell moved ahead of teammate Kerby Rychel, into first place in playoff points with 24. Guelph ended the game on its first shot of the extra period, with Dickinson wristing a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle over Smiths glove for his sixth goal of the playoffs. Smith made 27 saves. Guelph finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, while North Bay was 1-for-2 with the man advantage. North Bay captain Barclay Goodrow said the Battalion are looking forward to stepping back on the ice in less than 24 hours for a chance at evening the series before heading home for Game 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday. "I think the advantage of playing back-to-back is you can get right back at it and you dont lose too much of the momentum you gained from the game before. Hopefully, we come out tomorrow and forget what happened tonight and keep on going." Nike Zoom Cheap China . His Chicago Blackhawks teammates werent shocked when he found it. She still remembers the massive roar of the home crowd when the Canadians walked out on the pitch before 47,784 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in 2002. Lang expects a similar reception for the Canadian team as the host nation at this years tournament, which begins Tuesday.TORONTO -- When Steven Stamkos crashed into the post in Boston on Monday afternoon, the shock waves could be felt all the way to Sochi, Russia. The Tampa Bay Lightning star is out indefinitely with a broken right tibia, an injury that could be a significant blow to Team Canada in its efforts to defend gold at the Olympics. Stamkos was tied with Alex Steen as the NHLs leading goal scorer, and with Sidney Crosby for the points lead at the time of his injury and figured to be a lock to make the team. "Certainly from a Canada perspective, I dont know of a time frame, but certainly probably going to be questionable if he can play in the Olympics," said Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, whos part of Canadas management team. "Big loss for Tampa, big loss for our league." Stamkos lost his balance and crashed into the net during the second period of the Lightnings 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins. He writhed in pain on the ice and appeared to tell a trainer, "Its broken." The broken tibia will require surgery to repair. The Lightning did not release a time frame, likely in part because the complexity of the fracture could affect things. Surgery is set for Tuesday morning. "The biggest concern for me, and the rest of the Lightning, is that decisions are made in Stevens best long-term interest, and we feel this is the appropriate course of action," Lightning GM Steve Yzerman said in a statement. Yzerman is also Team Canadas GM, making this potentially a double loss. Stamkos had 14 goals and 23 points in the first 17 games of the season, helping Tampa Bay climb to first place in the Atlantic Division. Stamkos was just 20 years old when Canada won gold in Vancouver in 2010, and he did not make the cut for that team. In three world championships, Stamkos has 16 goals and 10 assists. Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson said the major priority right now is Stamkoss health, not the impact on the Olympics. "This isnt about the Olympic team," Nicholson said on the red carpet before Monday nights Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony. "This is about Steve Stamkos making sure he takes care of himself." Of course it would hurt Team Canada if Stamkos is unable to play. Nicholson said theres an injury clause in the Olympic agreement that could allow Canada to name Stamkos and replace him before the Games, but he said its "too early" tto talk about that possibility.dddddddddddd "Well see what happens in the next 48 hours and then start to discuss that," he said. "We were looking at naming the team by the first of January, but there is the injury clause and so well have to explore all of the those options." Team Canada had an injury question going into the 2010 Olympics when Anaheim Ducks centre Ryan Getzlaf was questionable with an ankle injury. Jeff Carter was flown into Vancouver just in case, but Getzlaf was able to play. That could happen again for Sochi, but with more complex travel. "Theres lots of complications around it, but its just devastating that it happened to him today," Nicholson said. "Weve got a lot of time to figure out where were going to go, and we just hope things go well with him." Babcock, Team Canadas head coach, was on the opposite bench with the Red Wings on Saturday night when Stamkos roofed a shot on Jimmy Howard. In Toronto for three former players being inducted into the Hall of Fame -- Chris Chelios, Brendan Shanahan and Scott Niedermayer -- Babcock expressed sadness over Stamkos injury. "Tough for him," he said. "Who knows. Well see what happens." While Holland conceded Monday evening that he hadnt seen the play Stamkos was injured on. But former NHL great and Canadian Olympian Wayne Gretzky did. "Its horrible,"said Gretzky, a former GM for Team Canada . "(You) dont want to see anybody get an injury like he sustained today. Its unfortunate, and thats the risk of being of being a National Hockey League player or a professional athlete. It really is difficult. Hopefully he mends from this and comes back even stronger. Hes a wonderful young man, and Im sure hell come back a better player." If he cannot come back in time to help Team Canada in Sochi, it could open the door for someone like Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars or perhaps Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks. Neither of those players were invited to Olympic orientation camp in Calgary, but preparing for an Olympic tournament without Stamkos is not something Canada wanted. "Youre never replacing Steve Stamkos," Nicholson said. "We have a lot of great players. Steve Yzerman has a very difficult job putting this team together, but you dont replace Steve Stamkos and well just have to find another way to make sure the lineups strong." ' ' '
