ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Detroit slugger Miguel Cabreras 10th inning at-bat against Tampa Bay closer Fernando Rodney overshadowed the Rays comeback victory. Yunel Escobar had an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Rays rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Tigers on Saturday night. But most of the attention after the game centred on Cabrera yelling at the Tampa Bay dugout after he struck out against Rodney. The Rays right-hander threw an in-tight and up pitch to back Cabrera off the plate during the at-bat. "I dont know what hes saying," Rodney said. "Im trying to do my job. You have to pitch inside sometimes. You have to pitch inside, outside, everywhere. You dont want to hit nobody because the game is on the line. "Thats what I got on my mind, try to move (him) a little bit because the guy is a dangerous hitter." Cabrera declined to comment about the confrontation, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland talked about it in a strong way. "I dont care about throwing inside, but I dont like it up there, and we will not tolerate that," Leyland said. "Im not accusing anybody of anything but we wont tolerate that. If youre going to just rare back and throw it, you cant throw it there. Thatll cause a lot of problems for people. Thats not a good idea. Thats not acceptable. "We lost a tough game. They earned the win, they got the win, and OK, more power to them, but throwing in that area is not acceptable, and somebody pays the price for that throughout baseball. Thats just the way baseball is. Thats not free. Theres no free lunch. That wont be tolerated. You can take that to the bank" Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said he had no idea why Cabrera was upset. "Youd have to ask him why," Maddon said. "I was kind of surprised, actually." Rodney (3-2) threw two scoreless innings for the win Cabrera went 1 for 4 with a walk, but his major league-leading batting average dropped two points to .375. He has a 14-game hitting streak. James Loney had a one-out single in the 10th off Bruce Rondon (0-1). Pinch-runner Sam Fuld went to second on Wil Myers single, and after Luke Scott struck out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Escobar won it for the Rays with a line drive that sailed over the head of centre fielder Austin Jackson. "Im very happy that I was able to help the team win," Escobar said through an interpreter. Scott tied it at 3 on a solo homer with one out in the eighth off Tigers starter Justin Verlander, who allowed three runs, nine hits and four walks during a season-high eight innings. Verlander is winless in his last four starts. "This is the game weve talked about that we have to start winning, and we won it tonight against a really good team," Maddon said. Rays slugger Evan Longoria was out of the starting lineup for the first time this season due to a sore right foot. The third baseman, who left Friday nights game, is also expected to sit out on Sunday against the Tigers. Jackson hit an opposite-field solo homer to right, and Jhonny Peralta had a two-run single off Chris Archer that put the Tigers ahead 3-0 in the third. Archer gave up three runs, five hits, three walks and had three strikeouts in five innings. Loney had an RBI single during the fifth to get the Rays within 3-2. Verlander avoided further damage by getting a double-play grounder from rookie Myers with two on and one out. Loney grounded into a double play with runners on the corners and one out in the seventh. Myers flied out with two runners on to end the first. Tampa Bays Desmond Jennings tripled and scored on Ben Zobrists grounder in the third. Jennings, playing in centre, was charged with an error in the eighth, which snapped a streak of 262 games in the outfield without a miscue. They show us what are flaws are, manager Jeff Banister said.Dyson surrendered a leadoff single in the 10th, but he struck out the next two batters and notched his 17th save in 19 attempts. Bush (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, which lifted the Rangers to a club-record 52-29 at the 81-game mark. Its a good number. Its a much better number than being the other way around, Banister said. Were not going to toast to halfway.Flip their record, and its still three games better than the Twins (25-54).Trevor Plouffe tied the game for the Twins with a two-run home run in the seventh that spoiled Martin Perezs shutout bid, but Desmond took Fernando Abad (1-3) deep to start the extra session. Abad has taken the loss in three of his last four appearances.Obviously that fastball wasnt where he wanted it, Twins manager Paul Molitor said.Ervin Santana turned in his third straight sturdy start for the Twins, though he needed 117 pitches to log 6 1/3 innings. Two of his three walks came in the seventh, when pinch-hitter Jurickson Profar put the Rangers in front with a two-run single off reliever Ryan Pressly. Santana struck out five and allowed only three hits.Perez retired the first 10 batters he faced and finished the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with double plays. In the fifth, after Max Kepler sacrificed to move the runners up to second and third, Kurt Suzuki tried to bunt, too. Plouffe broke for home with the pitch, but the ball popped high enough in the air for first baseman Mitch Moreland to catch it and throw across the diamond for an easy out.dddddddddddd Just the type of ugly mistakes that have made a bad season much worse for the Twins. It didnt work out. We didnt get the ball down, Molitor said.Throwing strong in his first full season since Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his elbow, Perez hasnt lost in eight starts. The left-hander allowed five hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out three, taking his second no-decision during that span.IAN IS IN A GROOVEDesmond, in his first season with the Rangers, leads the majors with 34 multi-hit games. He hit .358 in June and is tied for the team lead in homers (15) and RBI (52), making quite the case for the All-Star team.He just continues to impress us every single night he goes out there, Banister said.DOZIERS DRIVESBrian Dozier singled before Plouffes homer, stretching his hitting streak to a career-high 13 consecutive games during which hes hitting .431 with 12 extra-base hits and 13 RBI. Doziers run of 11 games in a row with at least one extra-base hit ended as the longest in a single season in the majors since Chipper Jones had 14 straight in 2006, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.TRAINERS ROOMRangers: RHP Yu Darvish (shoulder) took another step toward returning to the rotation, throwing a smooth bullpen session before the game. Hell start a rehab assignment Monday with Double-A Frisco. RHP Keone Kela (elbow) could be back in the bullpen after the All-Star break. Hell pitch Monday for Triple-A Round Rock.Twins: Miguel Sano played 3B in his return from rehab (hamstring), and he threw Adrian Beltre out with an off-balance, bare-handed grab of a slow grounder to end the sixth. Sano pumped his arm on the way to the dugout. With the RF experiment all but over, Sano will rotate between 3B and DH.UP NEXTRangers RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season Saturday afternoon.
